Zsolt Bodoni - Previously On
Zsolt Bodoni's exhibition of a selection of recent material shows hybrid artworks. Although the idea of backlit images seems to make the exhibited material unanimously identifiable, they differ in their content and technical complexity. Moreover, they build on the motif system of the artist's earlier works in a very conscious and ironic way. Bodoni's paintings repeat and mix key elements from the universal history of art and his own work, all this in a collage-like way, but by juxtaposing two elements not next to, rather over one another, he creates a novelty not visible to the naked eye. This effect is accentuated by his hybrid image-creating technique. The lighting from behind exploits the collage's meaning-expanding character in a cinematic way. In the same frame, two successive compositions of the painted surface are produced by different lighting effects. In some situations the light reaches the painted, worked surface only from the front, in others only from behind. This type of painting becomes, in certain places, very similar in its visual elements and its effects on the human senses to the montage technique that prevailed in early cinema
